Customer Rating: - The Birth of Rock and Roll
As a fan of the older Big Joe I was very pleasantly surprised to hear his earlier work. One can clearly hear the roots of Rock and Roll in an essential Blues record. Powerful performances and a tight orchestra. A peace of history.
Customer Rating: - Shake, Rattle And Roll: The Original
These days Big Joe Turner is a little overlooked. His blues peers and followerd have become much more famous but the fact of the matter is that Turner was instrumental in rock & roll. This album gives us some fine examples. Most important song on here is the original version of Shake Rattle and Roll, later covered by Bill Haley and Elvis.
For people interested in the roots of r&r this CD is not to be missed.
Customer Rating: - Good as I expected!
Very good as usual.....Joe Turner is one of the great Blues singers of our times!
Customer Rating: - Shake Rattle N' Roll
the years 1949-1950-1951 were the years when what came to be called "jump blues' morphed into what would later be termed Rock and Roll, even tho- that name wouldn't come until years later. Big Joe Turner was one of those first artists to make that transition, even though he had been singing basically the same kind of music for at least ten years before that, if you can hear any of his recordings from the early to mid 1940's you will hear that same kind of blues shouting, with a booogie woogie beat in the background. Nevertheless, these are some of the seminal recordings in the development of r&r, all from The Atlantic label. If you like blues shouters like Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Wynonie Harris, Jimmy Rushing, and that kind of stuff, then you will love this CD.
