The Carl Stalling Project, Volume 2: More Music From Warner Bros. Cartoons 1939-1957

(more) »rank: 48086

from: Warner Bros / Wea

Editorial Product Review: :The second volume of the master Warner Bros. cartoon composer's work downplays the head-spinning montage of the first in favor of just-as-head-spinning complete scores. They aren't from the studio's best-known cartoons but from some of Stalling's most impressive tempo-warping, all-systems-go pieces, augmented by a few mini-pieces that illustrate the way he could transform barely familiar show tunes and classical themes into wild, rubbery jokes. Even without images, Stalling could make an orchestra suggest a 'Flea-Ridden Sheep Dog' in 24 seconds flat and run enough changes on Stephen Foster's 'Camptown Races' to match ...

Best of the Power Rangers: Songs from the TV Series

(more) »rank: 10877

by: Various Artists

Editorial Product Review: :When it comes to morphing, Power Rangers producer Haim Saban is no slouch himself, having seen his efforts at translating and marketing a '70s Japanese kids' action show originally called Dinosaur Task Force Zyuranger blossom into a billion-dollar pop-culture empire. This soundtrack chronicles the musical side of the Saban/Power Rangers saga, collecting 16 tracks that span the 1990s' 'Go, Go Power Rangers' through the show's Turbo and Zeo phases to its more recent Wild Force incarnation. For the uninitiated, the music here is a long way from cutesy Hanna-Barbera jingles; Saban (who's ...

Touched By an Angel: Christmas Album

(more) »rank: 35092

by: Crystal Lewis feat. Kirk Franklin

Editorial Product Review: :As an incredibly successful TV drama that encourages the perseverance of the human spirit against all odds, Touched by an Angel is a natural outlet for the religious celebration of Christmas. The lineup is a veritable who's who of contemporary country, R&B, pop, and gospel, and the music is all smooth as butter, with pianos twinkling like lights on the tree. Angel star Della Reese contributes the mild R&B-inflected 'I Can Dream.' Country star Randy Travis, with a bounty of flutes and stringed instruments, adds his Nashville twang to the Elizabethan ballad ...

Bugs Bunny on Broadway

(more) »rank: 14242

from: Warner Bros / Wea

Editorial Product Review: :Though it's the 'cast album' to the touring Bugs Bunny on Broadway show, which featured a 50-piece orchestra playing to the original cartoons, the real stars here are not the musicians but Carl Stalling and Milton J. Franklyn. As the composers behind the Looney Toons cartoons, Stalling (and later Franklyn) expertly composed scores that borrowed from classical music, popular songs of the day, and the whimsical compositions of Raymond Scott. Working with talents like Chuck Avery (the most musically adventurous of Bugs Bunny's directors) and voice actors Arthur Q. Bryan (Elmer Fudd) ...

Providence: Music from the Television Series

(more) »rank: 65019

by: Various Artists

Editorial Product Review: :For the mature, family-oriented TV drama series Providence, nothing less than intelligent, thoughtful songs would suffice for its soundtrack. And from the folksy style of Dar Williams and Jonatha Brooke to the country-pop of Rebecca Lynn Howard and Kim Richey, this collection of songs delivers the goods. Most of the songs here would fall into the category of adult contemporary--Williams's ode to psychotherapy is lyrically incisive and fluffy with harmony, and Howard belts her delicate ballad with the elegant poise of Faith Hill. Individually, most of the songs manage to avoid AC's ...
